Qualifying Conditions

The State of Kentucky requires that potential patients be Kentucky residents, have no disqualifying felony offense convictions, and have at least one of the following qualifying conditions certified by a medical cannabis registered practitioner:

  • Any type or form of cancer;
  • Chronic or severe pain;
  • Epilepsy or other intractable seizure disorder;
  • Multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, or spasticity;
  • Chronic nausea or cyclical vomiting syndrome; or
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds found in cannabis that provide a variety of therapeutic effects by interacting with receptors throughout your body.

  • THC (tetrahydrocannabinol): Strong antiinflammatory pain killer, bronchodilator, muscle relaxant, and neuroprotectant, amongst other qualities.
  • CBD (cannabidiol): Reduces anxiousness and nausea, is anti-convulsion, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotectant, amongst other qualities.

Strain Categories

Medical cannabis strains are broadly categorized as Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid.

  • Indica: Typically produces a full body sensation, typically used for nighttime medicating.
  • Sativa: Typically produces a cerebral (head) sensation. Typically used for daytime medicating.
  • Hybrid: Mixed strains, Indica dominant or Sativa dominant, and can provide a balanced effect.

How different medical cannabis products work

Medical cannabis products can feel very different depending on how they are used. The onset time, how long effects last, and how strong the experience feels can vary by product type, dosage, and the individual patient.

Oral ingestion

Edibles, capsules, tinctures, liquids, and pills

How long does it take to feel the effects?

Oral products usually take longer to kick in than inhaled products. In many cases, patients begin to feel effects in about 1 to 2 hours, though onset may take longer depending on the product and the person.

How long do the effects last?

Depending on your metabolism and the dose consumed, oral forms of administration can last anywhere from 4 to 8 hours or more.

How do oral products compare to other options?

Products such as edibles or capsules can increase and prolong pain relief for a longer period than inhaled cannabis. These products may also contain high doses of CBD and therefore may be useful for some patients seeking relief without the rapid rise and fall sometimes associated with inhaled products.

Will everyone feel oral products the same way?

No. Oral products can feel different from one person to another. Effects vary based on body chemistry, dose, tolerance, whether you have eaten recently, and the specific product used.

Who may benefit from oral products?

Edibles and other ingestible products may be useful for some patients who need longer-lasting effects. Patients with more persistent or chronic symptoms often prefer products that provide steadier relief over a longer period of time.

Start low and wait before taking more. One of the most common mistakes with edibles is taking an additional dose too soon because the effects are delayed.

Topical products

Patches, creams, and lotions

How long does it take to feel the effects?

Topical applications are often felt relatively quickly, sometimes within about 30 minutes. Absorption can vary based on skin integrity and where the product is applied.

How long do the effects last?

Topicals can provide relief for several hours. The exact duration depends on the product type, how much is used, and the individual patient.

How do topical products benefit patients?

Topicals are often chosen for more localized relief. They are commonly used on specific areas of the body rather than for whole-body effects.

Will topicals make me feel “high”?

In many cases, no. Most topical products are used for localized support and are not intended to create the same experience associated with inhaled or ingested THC products.

Who may benefit from topical products?

Topicals may be a good option for patients who want to target a specific area. Patients with more persistent or widespread symptoms may need a different delivery method depending on their goals.

Because absorption is affected by the skin and the area of application, results can vary from one person to another.

Vaporization

Plant material and oils

How long does it take to feel the effects?

When cannabis is vaporized, noticeable effects are often felt within minutes. This is one of the faster delivery methods available.

How long do the effects last?

Depending on the dose, patients may feel the effects of vaporizing for about 2 to 3 hours. In general, faster onset is often paired with a shorter duration than many oral products.

How could vaporization benefit me?

Inhalation can be useful for patients who want faster-acting relief. Some patients use vaporized products for more immediate effects, while using another product type for longer-lasting support.

Will the product stay in my system?

Product effects may wear off in a few hours, but cannabinoids can remain in the body longer than the active feeling itself. How long they remain varies based on frequency of use and the individual.

What should I know before choosing vaporization?

Vaporized products act quickly, so patients should still begin with a low dose and pay close attention to how they feel. Patients with a history of breathing-related concerns should discuss product selection carefully.

Kentucky rules matter here. Patients should use only approved product types and follow all state guidance, packaging instructions, and practitioner recommendations.

Dosing and safety information

The amount of THC and other cannabinoids, directions for use, and dose per serving can be found on the product packaging. Dosing varies by product. To avoid unwanted effects, it is recommended to start at a low dose and increase slowly over time.

Effects and impairment

Medical cannabis can impair coordination, judgment, reaction time, and attention. Patients should not drive, operate machinery, or engage in potentially dangerous activities while impaired.

  • Altered senses
  • Altered sense of time
  • Changes in mood
  • Impaired body movement
  • Difficulty thinking and problem-solving
  • Memory disruption
  • Hallucinations or delusions in higher doses
  • Psychosis in some cases

When cannabis may be harmful

Patients should speak with a healthcare professional before using medical cannabis, especially if they have underlying medical conditions or take other medications. Extra caution may be warranted for people with:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Arrhythmia
  • Poorly controlled hypertension
  • Severe heart failure
  • A history of psychotic disorder
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
